How to Make Good Cajun Seasoning at Home
December 21, 2023

What is cajun seasoning in the first place you ask? Actually, Cajun seasoning is a unique blend of spices with or without salt that can add flavor to a variety of dishes. To tell the truth, going to restaurants can be good or not so good. Not only do I sometimes walk away wishing the food captured more of the flavor of its origin, I wish I would have cooked my own meal too.
Have you ever wanted just a little more seasoning in your food? Sometimes in restaurants we don’t want to over season the food so they hold back on some of the flavor, especially salt. That is where our cajun seasoning blend comes to the rescue.
Cajun Seasoning is a staple in homes in New Orleans, for this reason I always have it on hand. In addition, it can be added to a variety of dishes, not just Gumbo and Red Beans and Rice. Also, it is delicious on seafood and chicken and adds a lot of flavor to just plain rice. Below is a quick cajun seasoning that you can keep right at home ready to add to those dishes that need just a little more flavor.
Cajun Seasoning Ingredients
- Coarse black pepper| 1 tablespoon
- Granulated onion | 1 tablespoon
- Granulated garlic | 1 tablespoon
- Oregano | 1 tablespoon
- White pepper | 1 tablespoon
- Thyme | 1 tablespoon
- Cayenne Pepper | 1 tablespoon
- Sea Salt | 1 tablespoon
- Paprika | 2 tablespoons
Optional Ingredients (added in 1 tablespoon increments)
- Italian herbs
- Crushed Red Pepper (this will make the seasoning a little spicier)
- Parsley (this will tone down the spicy notes)
- Chili Powder (a great addition is adding to chicken, or chili)

Directions
- Mix all ingredients together.
- Store in an airtight container, in a cool and dry place.
Additionally, try this in the Gumbo recipe by replacing the individual seasoning with 1/2 tablespoon of cajun seasoning. Finally, when the Gumbo is done, adjust the seasonings to your liking. The seasoning can actually be stored for 3 months, but it won’t last that long 🙂
